Wellington Parish’s Tree Warden
I’m Steve Palmer and I was appointed Wellington’s Tree Warden in mid-2006. I am a volunteer working under the direction of (not employed by) Taunton Deane Borough Council’s (TDBC) Heritage & Landscape Team.

I am not a qualified arboriculturist, just someone passionate about trees, who wants to contribute something tangible to the town. I am a former Town Councillor and currently Vice-Chairman of the Wellington Basins Volunteer Group.

Over the last 12 months I have been working to develop the role, gathering/organising Tree Preservation Order (TPO) data & making links with various local groups, i.e. Friends of Wellington Park, Wellington Basins Volunteer Group & Wellington in Bloom. In 2007 I will be raising the Tree Warden’s profile through various Projects (see below) & events as well as networking with Tree Wardens from adjoining parishes.

I also hope to set up a local conservation group, carrying out various practical tasks within the community – I’m not one for committees & prefer a more proactive approach. To this end I am formulating a personal education plan to identify & obtain the management & craft skills I will require as the role develops.

Role of Wellington’s Tree Warden
* Contact point for tree issues between TDBC (see contact details below) & Wellingtonians.
* Advise Wellington Town Council on tree-related issues.
* Monitor existing Tree Preservation Orders (TPO), identifying any specimens/areas for TPO consideration.
* Keep an eye on Wellington Park’s tree collection.
* Involve local people, groups, schools in the promotion & protection of Wellington’s tree stock.
* Promote TDBC, Tree Council & local projects within the community.
* Improve access to sites & trails.

Future Projects
* Wellington Park Tree Trail Walk & Talks.
* Wellington’s Ten Most Notable Trees.
* Survey of Parish Tree Stock – including Hedgerow Trees & Orchard Surveys.
* Establishment of community woodland & orchard.
* Website encompassing all Tree Wardens within Taunton Deane.

2007 promises to be a very lively & interesting year!
